‘Have mercy on me, a sinner’.
We’ve established that the Jesus Prayer was developed by monks following Paul’s advice in 1 Thessalonians (5:16-19): Pray without ceasing.
But what often gives people pause when they begin to pray it is the ‘sinner’ part. It’s hard to think of ourselves as sinners.
Yet this is the true Biblical origin of the prayer.
